I painted the original for Lunar New Year. I am of Chinese and Jamaican descent and every new year brings this specific feeling I have never quite been able to name — lucky but chaotic, hopeful but urgent, like good things are coming and you need to be ready for all of them at once.

The lucky cat has always represented prosperity and good fortune but I wanted to paint the version that felt true to me. Not calm and composed. Alive, whimsical, a little all over the place. That is the energy I wanted to bring into the new year and into this painting.
